Marketing stem cells as a modern day elixir
Over its nine years of operations the Australian Stem Cell Centre (ASCC) has received thousands of enquiries from the public looking for information on stem cell therapies and clinical trials. Indeed many of these enquiries were about unregulated, unproven or experimental stem cell treatments.

UPDATE: Beware of Dr Google: Make sure you get the full story on stem cells
It seems that almost every week there is a story in the newspapers about stem cells. Often these stories feature interviews with patients who have benefited, or hope to benefit, from new therapies using stem cells. While the stories reinforce the promise of regenerative medicine, and provide hope for many people suffering from currently incurable conditions, what is often lacking is any credible explanation on why the treatment worked.

UPDATE: Legal Challenges to US Federal Funding of Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research
The legal challenges began when two scientists filed a case arguing that US federal funding for embryonic stem cell research harmed the ability of adult stem cell scientists to get grant money. They also argued that embryonic stem cell research violates the Dickey-Wicker amendment, which prohibits funding for research which involves the destruction of human embryos.

Stem cell science attracts an extraordinary amount of attention due to the insight and possible treatments stem cell biology may offer patients suffering from currently incurable medical conditions. However in reality it remains early days in the development of stem cell based treatments, with the number of clinically proven applications limited to diseases of the blood and immune system and utilising blood forming stem cells from the bone marrow. Unfortunately, just because a treatment purports to use your own cells it is not necessarily free of risk.
