"From fetomaternal tolerance to immunomodulatory properties of placenta-derived cells in cell therapy."

Besides having an essential and unique role in fetal development and preparation for life outside of the womb, mounting evidence suggests that the human placenta may also hold the key to treating several conditions which arise during life itself, whereby tissue or organ function is compromised due to disease or injury.

Toward the ultimate goal of validating the potential of placental cells for use in treatment of inflammatory diseases, the aims of this meeting are:
  • To obtain an updated insight into the phenomenon of fetomaternal tolerance
  • To understand the mechanisms underlying the immunomodulatory effects of placenta-derived cells
  • To share examples of clinical applications of placental cells for treatment of conditions involving aberrant inflammatory responses

Furthermore, this meeting will also mark the first official appointment of the International Placenta Stem Cell Society (IPLASS), which was founded on September 12th, 2009, by a group of scientists who are bound by the common goal of strengthening research in this field.

The meeting is open to persons from all areas who have an interest in placenta-derived cells, including scientists focusing on basic research, as well as clinicians who wish to contribute to the translation of promising laboratory findings from bench to bedside.
