Board of DirectorsThe independent board of directors of the Australian Stem Cell Centre Ltd is made up of individuals who have experience in the fields of biotechnology, medicine, finance, law and business management. The members of the Board are:
Chairman Professor Vicki Sara was elected Chancellor of the University of Technology Sydney in 2004. She was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Research Council in July 2001. From September 1997 to June 2001 she was the Chair of the Council and a member of the Prime Minister’s Science, Engineering and Innovation Council (PMSEIC), and the CSIRO Board. She is Chair of the Bureau of Meteorology Advisory Board, a director of the Rio Tinto Foundation for a Sustainable Minerals Industry and the Australian Centre for Plan Functional Genomics. She is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. Professor Sara was appointed Vice-Chair of the OECD’s Global Science Forum in 1999 and member of the Advisory Board of the APEC R&D Leaders’ Forum in 2002. Professor Sara returned to Australia in 1993 following a research career at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. After receiving a UNESCO postdoctoral fellowship to Sweden, Professor Sara held various research positions at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, heading the Endocrine Pathology Research Laboratory. Whilst at the Institute she isolated a growth factor responsible for regulating foetal brain development. She was awarded the Rolf Luft medal for excellence in endocrine research in 1993 and the Sir John Eccles Award in 1994. She was appointed as foreign Professor of Karolinska Institute in 1995. She was awarded the Centenary Medal in 2003, and was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science by the University of Southern Queensland in 2004 and by Victoria University in 2005.
Professor Hugh Niall Dr Niall brings significant biotechnology management experience to this position. Most recently he was chief executive officer of Biota, a listed Australian biotech company focused on the discovery and development of treatments for human respiratory diseases. Previously he has held senior academic and commercial positions, including four years as VP of Research Discovery at Genentech. Dr Niall was a Board Member of the Howard Florey Institute from 1996 2003 and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard University’s Department of Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He is also the Chairman of the Diabetes Vaccine Development Centre. He was a founding director of the Australian Stem Cell Centre Ltd and was Chief Executive Officer of the Centre from July 2003 to July 2006.
The Hon Brian Gibson AM Brian Gibson was appointed as the Australian Government nominated director to the Board of the Australian Stem Cell Centre in August 2004. He is currently the Director of the Tasmanian Advisory Board of the AMP Society and has held various positions in parliament including: Senator for Tasmania (1993-2002); Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer (1996); Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Leader of the Opposition (1994-1996); and various committee services including as a member of the Senate Select Committee on the New Tax System, 1998-1999. Mr Gibson was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 1988 and Centenary Medal in 2003.
Dr Barry Jones AO Barry Jones is a former teacher, lawyer, politician and writer. He was Member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly 1972-77,Member of the House of Representatives 1977-98,Minister for Science 1983-90 and Australia's representative to UNESCO in Paris 1991-95. He is the only person to have been elected as a Fellow of the four Australian Academies (FAA, FAHA, FTSE, FASSA). He presently chairs the Victorian Schools Innovation Commission and serves on six medical research boards. He is a Visiting Fellow at Trinity College, Cambridge.
Mr Mark Richardson Mark Richardson was formerly Special Counsel of the firm Blake Dawson Waldron, specialising in biotechnology research ethics. He practices at the Victorian Bar. Mr Richardson sits on a number of Human Research Ethics Committees and is a member of the Victorian Biotechnology Ethics Advisory Committee.
Mr Brian Watson Brian Watson is the founder and Executive Chairman of Georgica Associates Pty Ltd, a private equity asset management and advisory firm. Mr. Watson was based in New York with J.P. Morgan from 1987-1999, as Global Head of Equity Underwriting from 1990-1995 and head of Global Private Equity Business from 1995-1999. He returned to Australia in 1999 and was Chairman of J.P. Morgan Australia from 1999 - 2000 and Managing Director of JP Morgan Partners (JPMP) Australia from 1999 - 2002. JPMP Australia invested across a broad spectrum of private equity opportunities in Australia.
Professor Lawrie Powell AC Professor Lawrie Powell AC is one of Queensland’s most celebrated medical researchers. He has led international investigation into liver disease and cancer for more than 25 years. His research has made significant contributions to the understanding of inherited liver disease and cirrhosis, especially haemochromatosis. Professor Powell was instrumental in the development of Brisbane’s new Comprehensive Cancer Research Centre at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research which will house almost 1000 scientists and support staff. He has received numerous national and international awards in recognition of his research achievements. Professor Powell is currently Director of Research at the Royal Brisbane Hospital and Women’s Hospital, Professor Emeritus at The University of Queensland and Honorary Senior Principal Research Fellow at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research. |
