Research in Australia

The Australian Stem Cell Centre is the largest most comprehensive stem cell research organisation in Australia. Our research is focused predominantly in the area of blood and heart diseases as well as exploring the fundamental challenges of stem cell biology that may in the future be applicable to a wide range of diseases and injuries. Even though we are the largest entity with the widest selection of research projects underway in both adult stem cell and embryonic stem cell fields, and have great faith in the therapeutic potential of stem cells, we are not yet at a stage where we are testing or offering any new stem cell-related treatments to patients. Our research projects are still very immature and it will be some years before we reach the stage of human clinical trials.

The following document provides an overview of stem cell therapy activity in Australia, covering clinical, preclinical and research activity, together with profiles of a number of institutions around Australia focusing on stem cell research covering a number of therapeutic areas.

The following websites contain information on current clinical trials for a number of diseases. The Australian Stem Cell Centre encourages any patients to consult with their specialist, who is best able to advise on suitability for clinical trials. The Australian Stem Cell Centre and the scientists and staff employed are not able to give any advice in relation to access to clinical trials or suitability. The following information is publicly available via the web.
