Research Focus
Isolation and characterization of stem cells in the adult lung.
Overview
Intractable, life-threatening respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis are leading causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide and are currently treated by palliation with no prospect of cure. These diseases are prime candidates for stem cell based therapies. However, this objective has been hindered by the inability to identify endogenous lung stem cells around which these therapies can be developed, and by the lack of knowledge about the way in which adult lung stem cells interact with their stromal microenvironment and the biomatrix scaffold of the lung. The broad objectives of this research program are to identify and characterize the respiratory epithelial and mesenchymal stem cell of the adult mouse lung, and to characterize the respiratory stem cell inductive microenvironments in which they reside and which specify their fate and regulate their regenerative potential.
