ASCC Research Portfolio

Susie Nilsson

Associate Professor Susie Nilsson (nee Begg) is currently head of the Niche Laboratory at the Australian Stem Cell Centre having moved from the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre at the end of 2005, where she was head of the Microenvironment Laboratory within the Stem Cell Program.

Associate Professor Nilsson is both nationally and internationally recognised for her research interests devoted to understanding the haemopoietic stem cell niche and mechanisms that regulate haemopoietic stem cells. She leads an independent program as well as having significant national and international collaborations. She has had continuous national and international peer-reviewed project grant support as well as being awarded an NHMRC CJ Martin and an RD Wright fellowship and being involved in the successful application for multiple equipment grants. Her underpinning scientific objective has been to characterise the haemopoietic stem cell niche. She developed an in vivo cell tracking model to identify haemopoietic stem cells (HSC) in situ and was one of the first investigators to provide convincing evidence that HSC preferentially seek and reside within the endosteal region of the bone marrow.

This model has enabled the identification of several key molecular components of the HSC niche and moreover to extend the roles of the niche to now include the attraction and retention of HSC to the niche, as well as regulation of HSC fate. Associate Professor Nilsson is the author of 37 publications, including 29 in the past 10 years. During this time she has been invited to submit 5 peer reviewed papers and 5 book chapters.

In the past decade, she been awarded 6 patents, all of which are at various stages from provisional applications to national phase. Her contributions have lead to 6 plenary invitations, 7 speaker invitations and 9 invitations to speak post-abstract submission at national and international meetings over the last decade. She is currently a member of Experimental Hematology and International Society for Stem Cell Research. She is on the editorial board and nominating committee of Experimental Hematology and has been chair and a member of the Emerging Leaders Task Force and a member of the Scientific Organising Committee of the International Society of Experimental Hematology.
